DanceXtra is an innovative, vibrant, and forward-thinking dance and live entertainment business based in Birmingham, West Midlands. As a respected dance company in the area, we run dance classes, special workshops, and private dance lessons for adults including wedding day first dance choreography.
The Beginning of DanceXtra
Formed in 1998 in Redditch by Kit McMurrugh, the team at DanceXtra started to teach country and western line dancing at The Irish Centre in Digbeth. This was quickly followed by line dancing classes in Redditch, Cotterridge, and Kings Heath. Social dances were put on in the local area, the main one being at Selly Oak, with regular live country music acts.
A Modern Twist
Change came about at the David Lloyd Centre in Great Barr, when modern line was introduced in 1999. All of the latest, most popular dances were taught to large classes of eager line dancers who were bursting to dance to the latest pop tracks. This was a break from the tradition of dancing to live or recorded country music. The cowboy hats, cowgirl skits, boots, and guns disappeared and were replaced by a casual dress code with dance shoes and trainers.
Popular with Passionate Dancers
As well as DJ-style social nights at David Lloyd and many venues around the Birmingham area, charity nights would see as many as 200 dancers in attendance. At the Sutton Coldfield Town Hall, a joint venture witness more than 450 line dancers brought together under one roof. The style of modern line was here to stay.
Latin in Line
By 2007, the line dance scene desperately needed a boost. We introduced Latin in line, which was very new and had only been tried by a few teachers from the ballroom dance world. Using a syllabus introduced by Keith Clifton (Kevin’s dad from Strictly Come Dancing), with some of the dances choreographed by our very own business owner Kit, our sessions were soon packed with excited solo dancers. They danced to what were primarily partner Latin dances such as the cha-cha, samba, salsa, rumba, pasodoble, and newly introduced dance forms to the West Midlands like the bachata, cumbia, merengue, mambo, and bachata tango.
Solo Salsa and Ballroom
In 2013, we introduced solo salsa and ballroom dance classes, being among the first in the UK to do so. With Kit having an extensive competitive background in ballroom and Latin American partner dancing as a child and an active experience in social dance in both salsa and modern jive (sometimes known as Ceroc), it was time for us to launch one-to-one dance lessons. These were for social dance purposes and situated at our dance base at The Erdington Conservative Club in Birmingham.
Variety of Dance Styles
At DanceXtra today, we teach the Argentine tango, salsa, swing, and all of the ballroom and Latin dances in European and American styles. Our team also offer the opportunity to learn dance choreography to make your wedding day even more special. We have also introduced modern jive classes and individual private dance lessons. Please note that our special dance workshops are currently under construction, so make sure to keep checking back to find out more information.
